Ik was van plan om mijn nieuwe interview met COMPUTERBANDIT afgelopen vrijdag te publiceren. De dag waarop de Duitse producer zijn nieuwste track Popper, Punks & Porsche Drivers uitbracht. Door een griepje heeft het iets langer moeten duren vanuit mijn kant. Bij deze nodig ik je dan alsnog van harte uit mijn interview met deze sympathieke oosterbuur te lezen en te luisteren naar zijn mix van synthwave en (experimentele) electronica.
I was planning to publish my new interview with COMPUTERBANDIT last Friday. The day on which the German producer released his latest track Popper, Punks & Porsche Drivers. Due to a flu it had to take a little longer from my side. I hereby cordially invite you to read my interview with this sympathetic eastern neighbor and to listen to his mix of synthwave and (experimental) electronica.
COMPUTERBANDIT, can you please introduce yourself?
The best way to get to know me is through my sound and my releases, because that's the most important thing for me - the music and my musical output. If someone had to describe me in three words, they would probably be: Synthlover, ´80ies-Addict and Music-Connoisseur.
How would you describe your sound?
I think my music is a combination of synthwave, electroclash and electronica and very influenced by ´80s music. I love to combine melodic elements with a certain amount of noise and power. In general, it is always important for me to stand for my own character and sound.
A new release from you came out on December 10th. What was your idea when you started writing this new track?
At the beginning of the production of the track called “Popper, Punks & Porsche Drivers”, the vocoder phrase was the main theme. Building on this, I wanted to keep the driving flair of the previous releases. The sound should be rough but melodically accessible. I think I succeeded in doing that.
You were very successful with one of your tracks going viral on Instagram. Can you tell us what happened?
It all started with a music post of mine showing an old cassette tape. The interest in the clip grew and grew, so I decided to release the track as an official release. It really was worth it.
You have a big fanbase on Instagram. How important is social media for you for the use of promoting new music?
After some initial scepticism, Instagram has become my main platform. The biggest exchange with other artists and fans now takes place there. I was surprised myself how well Instagram works as a promotion and exchange platform and I wouldn't want to do without it.
What equipment do you use in your studio?
I like to use old and new hardware synthesizers for my recordings. My setup is constantly changing because I like to try out a lot. What is always part of my setup, however, are old Roland devices from the ´80s. Effects chains, on the other hand, I like to work "in the box".
What do you think about the current state of synthwave and where do you think it will be going?
I think that unfortunately a lot of things repeat themselves without delivering new spirit. I'm always happy about releases that give me the feeling of "I haven't heard anything like this before". Maybe that's also the reason why I like to produce across genres. Maybe more artists in general should be braver and more experimental in their approach to new releases.
As 2021 is coming to an end, what are some of your favorite releases from this year?
Even though I can't listen to the track anymore, I have to mention "You are digital". Personally, I like the remix even a bit better.
